Rituals, customs and traditions in Indian Marriage vary as per religion and expanded region to the various parts of country. However there exist some common similarities between rituals in marriage ceremony of Hindus. Muslims, Christians and others.







Marriages in India are different in different parts of the country and they depend on the customs and traditions of the local region. Though there are various religions and regions in a country like India, Indians enjoy or celebrate the wedding occasion very interestingly. Customs and traditions in different religions vary from each other like Muslims Nikah differs a lot from Hindu Shaadi or Christian Weddings. We have numerous regions so Indian marriage customs or traditions vary in accordance to the religions that people follow.





Customs and traditions followed in most popular common Indian marriage





Hindu Shaadi Customs





Hindus Shaadi or marriages have several customs to be followed before and after the wedding ceremony viz. Pre wedding customs like Geet (Song ) party, Maamara also known as Bhath, Mehandi. On the day of wedding, Baarat is the most enjoying and rejoicing moment on both the sides of Bride and Groom in Indian wedding. Here the Groom arrives at Brides place to marry her, following with all the Hindu rituals. Baarat swagata is done very respectfully by the bride’s family members. Later towards the end of the ceremony, Hindus follow rituals like Parikrama, Pradakshina, Saath Phere and the most important from the Bride parents doing Kanya Daan which is considered very Holy activity for the parents. Once the couple gets married, the smart dashing Groom (Husband) takes her Bride (Wife) to his home. Here the family members of the Groom follows post marriage traditions like Gruha Pravesh, Dawar-Roka, and Muuh Dikhaai for newly Bride.





Swayamvara drill was common and traditionally followed in ancient times of Hindus community. The hallowed mark of Wedding or Shaadi, Mangalsutra is an inescapable part of the Hindu weddings in India. Every minor activity in the marriage ceremony involves great zeal which keeps the marriage environment live. Marriage with religiously followed trees, small plants like Tulsi Vivah or with a non living objects are most commonly followed in Hindus customs and societies from ancient times.





Rituals in Muslim’s Shaadi.





Shaadi in Muslims is termed as “Nikah" and is virtually wonderful or extraordinary in Muslims traditions. In Nikah the customs and ritual activities are broadcasted similar to Hindus marriage. Here also the rituals are divided as pre-marriage and post marriage on both the sides of Bride and Groom’s family. Same like Hindus rituals Muslims customs also varies from each other. In Islam the activities of marriage is bifurcated into various stages. This includes beginning of groom arrival at Mosque or the venue of marriage ceremony along with the Moulvi (Pandit) who performs the ritual activities in Muslims marriage. It is further continued with the farewell of bride and her goodbye to her parents and other family members, and welcoming in the new home for the bride.





Christian Weddings Customs.





Marriages in Christian are performed at Church, in the presence of Priest. White night gown, the traditional costume of the bride is worn by her with a head covering veil. According to the rites and traditions of the Christian marriage, the real wedding starts once the bride and groom reaches altar. By the time legal proceeding is happening at altar, songs are sung by the entire consort continued further with reading Bible. Priest who acts as the important person in the weddings asks questions whether the couple is fine to marry him / her. Once the couple agrees to live a loving relationship with each other Priest offers rings to bride and groom and asks them to exchange it with each other, ending this way following all the rituals the couple is declared as newly married husband wife.
